Is it possible to manage Dropbox and Google Docs using the same Web Interface?

Try to use cloudHQ...

It is possible to manage Dropbox and Google Docs using the same Web Interface.

You can manage (browse, copy, move, and edit) all your Dropbox files directly from a Google Docs interface.|||It seems infeasible! I don't think you can make it!

How To Export Documents from Google Docs to Your Computer?

Log into your Google account and go to the list of your Google docs. Now you can select the documents you want to export or select them all.

After selecting the documents you want click on More actions and then Export.

Now select how you want each of the document types converted when downloaded. You can choose different formats like MS Office, Open Office, PDF and others. Check the box next to Export all your files (up to 2 GB) if you want to export all of them. Yep, up to 2GB worth of files 鈥?if you have a lot of work in Google Docs like projects and collaborations, it鈥檚 nice to be able to export such a large amount.

A progress screen is shown while the files are being zipped and getting ready for download. If you have a large amount of documents and don鈥檛 want to wait, there鈥檚 an option to Email when ready and you鈥檒l get a download link emailed when they鈥檙e ready so you can work on other things.

The documents are zipped up and ready to be downloaded.

Download them to a location on your computer, external drive, or network location.

There you go! All of the documents you selected to export from Google Docs are ready to be used in the application format you specified.

How does Google docs work and for what reason?

Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. Google Docs combines the features of Writely and Spreadsheets with a presentation program incorporating technology designed by Tonic Systems. Data storage of any files up to 1GB each in size was introduced on January 13, 2010.

In Google Docs, how do you exclude dates in a sum range?

For example, If i want to add all dollar valued cells from A1 to C5 using formula Sum(A1:C5), and don't want the spreadsheet to add up dates within that range, how would I do that?|||Leave tha formula as it is and just format the cells where you display the dates as plain text. That way they won't be added to the sum.

to do this: select a cell with a date, click on the button that says 123 on the tool bar and select "plain text"

or just divide the sum in sums of ranges of cells excluding the cells with dates

this is the complete function list for Google Docs Spreadsheets

http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answe鈥?/a>

if you can find a function that excludes cells based on formatting, you're good

i've tried with SUMIF - doesn't work

Assuming you justifiably refuse to pay for MS-Office, have you tried Open Office, free and compatible, from:

Then, you would only need to find an "online data storage" service like (the 2 GB free) Mozy:

Comparison between MS Office, Open Office and Google Docs?

Between MS Office, Open Office and Google Docs, which do you find most useful and why?

Do let me know the source(s), if any, of your answer.

Thank you.|||MS Office has the most polish and the most features -- it's also the most commonly used office suite, however, it is not free. An Office license usually costs around $60~200 depending on the type of license.

There is a free version of Office called Office Starter 2010 however it is ad supported and only has 2 apps: Word and Excel.

Open Office on the other hand is open source, and therefore free. It tries to emulate the look and feel of Microsoft Office as well as having most of the features of Microsoft Office. However, development of Open Office is slow and because of internal conflict, the project has forked into 2 directions, Open Office and Open Libre.

Google Docs is an online web app, it can be used if you have a Google account. Google Docs only has 3 applications -- a word processor, spreadsheet app and the powerpoint alternative.

It is very basic and only has a fraction of the functions of the other 2 programs, but the upside is that it can be used without installing any programs because it runs in the browser.

Also files you create on Google docs are hosted directly on Google servers.|||Microsoft office Is by far the best out of all of them. It is more compatible with other people (although open office is compatible with office documents) I find google docs lags in many of the advanced user features that office has. If cost is your issue, open office is a great alternative, although not a substitute for Microsoft office|||Both MS Office and OpenOffice need to run on a second operating system before they run successfully on your system, does .NET or Java ring a bell. ;)

Google docs is very basic but works well if you have a great internet connection.

You could also try free office software from ssuitesoft.com. Their software does not need Java or .NET to run. :)

What are the pros and cons of the new Google Docs?

Google Docs, from what I understand is an online word processor, spreadsheet, and data base manager. It is my hope that someday Yahoo will be able to expand on this project. In looking forward to the day when documents can be shared on line without worrying about what version/software each computer has, what are the pros and cons right now of Google Docs? How does this new program compare to MS Office or the new and free Open Office?

Here is the link to more information about the new service:

http://www.google.com/google-d-s/hpp/hpp鈥?/a>

Requirements are currently the following:

1.) A Google Account

2.) Internet Access

Jeff|||Well some of the cons are...

1) limited feature set compared to MS word/excel

2) You have to be connected to the net to use them

3) They require you to relearn some of the basic features and where functions are located (relearning takes time and money for companies)

Some of the pros is that...

1) Quick access to your documents anywhere in the world

2) Usually a bit easier to use once you learn where everything is

3) Has a few more "collaborative" features such as file sharing, simultaneously working on the same files and doesn't need to be installed on your computer to use them.

I don't think Yahoo is going to be able to expand on Google's projects like this since they are often far behind in the market for such technology. But who knows in the future.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

When creating a document in google docs. How private is it? If I created a document can all of my contacts view the right a way? or I have to enable them to view it first? Can I edit Google Docs with the latest Kindle?

I want to be able to edit documents over 3g with the latest Kindle, but I can not find out if this is possible. Has anyone been able to do this?|||Yes you can read and edit google docs on the latest 3g kindle.

Another tip, if you in the market, you can get a good deal on a kindle here:

http://www.syncpedia.com/goto/kindle_sto鈥?/a>

You could either consider the regular 3g kindle or the special offer 3g kindle for $25 less.

The special offer kindle just has small ads on non critical areas like the screen saver or menu. It's debatable if it's worth the discount, but from what I have read it's easier to ignore (I have the regular 3g kindle from before the special offer model was offered).

What is wrong with google docs?

What's the best app. to use for making a mailing list for invitations to an event? Word, Excel, Google docs?

I use a MacBook, and it has Windows and Leopard available, so I'm flexible! Thanks!|||If you are going to be doing this on a regular basis, and you will be having many names and addresses to keep track of (like hundreds), then I would suggest a relational database application such as MS-Access.

Otherwise, a spreadsheet application will do. If you already have MS-Excel, then go ahead and use that, else download OpenOfffice.org which is FREE.

You may wish to consider breaking the Names and Addresses down into several "fields":

鈥? Salutation

鈥? First Name

鈥? Middle Name

鈥? Last Name

鈥? Suffix

鈥? Address-1

鈥? Address-2

鈥? City

鈥? State

鈥? ZipCode

It is much easier putting together various field values into a single string of data, than it is trying to break apart multiple values in a single field.

Can you use Y!A or Google docs to discredit someone's "originality"?

I know you can't sue someone for plagiarizing your text from yahoo answers because Yahoo owns everything you post. But would you use it to discredit someone's originality?

And what about Google Docs, if I've written about half a book's worth of material and someone plagiarized it somehow, can I use the document as evidence that they stole my work?|||As the documents are time stamped for all eternity, sure. See websites the way they were designed to be seen. Sync your bookmarks or add a few as you go. Search the web using the touchscreen keyboard. Zoom in and out by tapping the multi-touch display. And now, iPod touch does even more with the introduction of web apps. With web apps, the power of the Internet meets the brilliance of multi-touch. And suddenly, iPod touch can do that much more.

Flick through lists of news articles on Digg. Play games like Sudoku and Bejeweled with the touch of a finger. View movie times, train schedules, and blogs.

Web apps don鈥檛 just extend the functionality of iPod touch, they do it in style. Since web apps are websites designed specifically for the 3.5-inch screen, you鈥檒l find the viewing experience amazing.

I learned that it's not safe to store private files in google docs. What's a good website I can store files?

I still prefer to upload my files online just in case my laptop shuts down, but I'm looking for a reliable storage site with absolute privacy.|||The issue with security and privacy isn't with Google Docs- it's having the files online in the first place. Having your files ANYWHERE makes them partially susceptible to being compromised- by the company employees, hackers, 3rd party vendors, etc.

An "online storage site with absolute privacy" doesn't exist. For that matter, neither does an offline version. But if you're looking for something reasonable (both in terms of privacy and cost) Google Docs is a good way to go. Keep in mind the only two "mainstream" ways to get in is through your password and by 'forging' your password through personal questions. To prevent the first, pick a passphrase with more than 15 characters and include numbers. To keep your password from being reset from the "personal reset questions" that you put in your application, make sure the questions can't be found on the internet. You'd be surprised how often a person's DoB, place of birth, and other personal facts are on social networking sites like Facebook. Double check to make sure all these are indeed personal, and you have yourself a reasonably safe storage site for online files.

That means Google docs or Microsoft Skydrive won't cut the mustard for you.

The best of the freebee software right now is LibreOffice, which is an updated version of OpenOffice. Jim's mini-history is on the money.

Of course, you might want to spring for Microsoft Word if you're really serious about writing. Not free, but not as expensive as top of the line professional level QuarkExpress.

After you write your book you can use another free software called Calibre to turn it into an ePub file suitable for distribution as an e-book.|||It's okay, but I prefer Libre Office. It has more features as well as more plug-ins.

Since you're writing a novel, you might take a look at yWriter. It's not a conventional word processor. It's more database-driven so you can write scenes in a non-linear fashion and then connect them, and also do things like track your timeline and characters. There are similar paid products, but playing with a freebie may give you an idea as to whether this type of software fits your writing style better than a straightforward word processor.|||It is useful if you don't intent to print the completed document, and for collaboration.

Is Google Docs or Open Office any real substitute for Microsoft Word?

Do they enable you to do the same things you can do on Word or are the features much more limited?

Thanks!|||Don鈥檛 even go there!

In an ideal world we would all convert to LPG for our vehicles, and look where that went. The less people who participate, the less of an advantage being part of, is.

Stick with something you know will be compatible with the masses, unless that is you have the time to protest against the monopoly Microsoft have at the moment. And unless you鈥檙e an activist, I would advise you stay with MS Word.

Principle and politics are for another day.

I would not agree that any of these applications are best of better, but that MS word is, as it is, the market bench mark.

If you want to protest against MS monopoly and unfair trading, then just borrow a copy.

People, who resent MS for their monopoly, will swear by the others. By doing that, they will be biased against MS Word, and give you false advice. Fact is, if you want the compatibility, MS is the one you have to have.|||Google Docs is much more limited than Word but OpenOffice is about the same feature wise. There are a few things that show up in one but not the other and vice versa. My biggest gripe with OpenOffice is that it's visually on the level of Word 97 even though the capabilities are far beyond that.|||OpenOffice is great, oarticularly because it's free xD

Yeah, it's a decent substitute for Word, although there may be future versions of Word that use different file types to .doc (Note - it's unlikely that this will change), which would render all previous versions of basically everything useless.

Of course if you can go about getting Word for free (LEGALLY lol) then it's going to be better - marginally - but otherwise, OpenOffice is worth your time. I haven't tried Google Docs.|||Open Office is a very good substitute for Word. If work with all of Word file extensions. Just remember to set it default to either .doc or .rtf and you will have no problems. It's tool bars and drop down menus are very much like Words. It's free, so give it a try. I think you'll be quite pleased.

How safe are your documents on Google Docs?

I love the idea of beign able to access your documents anywhere, but I'm a little iffy about it. How safe are they really? Could someone easily access them, or hack into them? What are your opinions about it? (Or Office Live Workspace?). Any and all opinions are appreciated! Thanks!|||There are two tips which can greatly improve your safety:

1) When using an unencrypted wireless connection or some other network you don't really trust, use https://docs.google.com instead of http://docs.google.com. The extra 's' means 'secure'; all traffic is encrypted. The only down-side is it's a little bit slower.

2) When you use someone else's computer (especially at an Internet cafe or at a hotel), don't forget to logout of your Google account. And when logging in, don't check "remember my password". Pretty obvious.

How can you upload .docx files to Google Docs? Or when are they going to add support?

Zoho has been doing this for a while, but you'd think a bigger company with better resources would be able to do this more easily. I switch to Google because they have a better interface.|||Google are evidently working on this - back in November 2008 they started indexing .docx files in search results, including being able to "view as HTML" them, so they've obviously gotten a working solution... but the question is, when will they apply this to Google Docs? Nobody knows (outside of Google, anyway!). But in the meantime, it certainly means that you can use Google itself to convert .docx files to HTML, then copy-paste them into Google Docs.

Failing that, you're best using a free online converter like http://www.docx2doc.com/

Does Google Docs take first publication rights?

My computer is faulty at best. I don't feel safe with my story on it. I save my story on a flash drive, but I fear that the computer might take out my flash drive too. If I posted my book on Google Docs, would it take the first publication rights, even if I set it to private and didn't let anyone see it?|||I believe first publication rights are relevant only for short stories, so if you're not writing those, you have nothing to worry about. But if nobody other than you can access the file(s), then they're not published in any meaningful sense of the word.

You might want to look at Dropbox (www.dropbox.com). This is mainly meant for synchronising files between multiple computers, but works well for backups too. You download a little program to make it work and create a "dropbox" folder on your hard disk. Anything you put in there is automatically uploaded to their server. You can have shared folders that the world can read, but by default everything is private and password-protected.

They give you 2GB of storage (about as much as a flash drive) for free. That will hold your million words of crap :-) many times over. You can pay for more if you need it|||Simple answer: no.

Generally, you don't give away any kind of publication rights unless there is a contract involved.

But the primary purpose behind Google Docs (all of their programs) is to provide a way to share your files online with other people and to be able to access and edit/create new, files from any computer anywhere...hence the ability to "share".|||They are pretty much the same for what they can do, and I don't use them often, but have done.

And if either one can do what you require with tables, grids, flow charts, why the need for the comparison?

You have used both and have no complaints, so why not leave it at that and see what others have to say on the subject.

givemestrength|||Excel is a Microsoft product. It is friendly to most of the computer users and it can be easily view and edit is many mobiles.|||Excel has more features and google is a scaled down version that requires a google account.

If your not doing anything complex then google docs is fine but if you are then you should use excel.

Is there something similiar to google docs where I can store lists and documents online?

I want to be able to store documents online and be able to access them from different computers for my own personal use. They are microsoft word docs and excel docs. I have been using google docs but I have some issues with it. is anyone else familiar with google docs and is there something out that similiar to it but better?|||I would install DropBox on your computers and let the service sync your files to the other computers. When you make a change on one computer, the changes will be replicated on the other computers. Google Docs isn't a real word processor so you may experience problems with formatting, etc. If you use DropBox, you can keep your documents' original formatting and keep using MS Word and Excel to edit them.

How do you add a document from the iPhone app DraftPad to Google Docs?

It there a way take a document from the iPhone app DraftPad, and save it in Google Docs?|||you can backup it to computer, try to search some backup software.

How do you turn off highlighted text in Google docs?

I originally created some documents in Google docs. When I was ready to move them to word i tried to remove some highlighting off some text and it did not work. I can't get it off in Word either.|||How did the highlighted text get there in the first place? Did you put the background color for the text? If you did, highlight them with white then it should be fine.

If you have just paste the text from somewhere else, and you don't care losing Bold fonts, or italicized ones, or any sort of formatting and you are fine with a plain text, then you can copy the text first from a web page or from your Google Docs, and then paste it in Notepad. Once it is pasted in Notepad, copy the text from there and paste it back to Google Docs.
