Since I don't have the money for Microsoft office, Is google docs a good free word processor?

Please don't spam or plug in any random word processor software or a random free one that is the can be found page 80 on a google search, if you know what I mean.|||Web-based (aka "cloud"-based) software is not robust enough for your purpose. That means Google docs or Microsoft Skydrive won't cut the mustard for you.

The best of the freebee software right now is LibreOffice, which is an updated version of OpenOffice. Jim's mini-history is on the money.

Of course, you might want to spring for Microsoft Word if you're really serious about writing. Not free, but not as expensive as top of the line professional level QuarkExpress.

After you write your book you can use another free software called Calibre to turn it into an ePub file suitable for distribution as an e-book.|||It's okay, but I prefer Libre Office. It has more features as well as more plug-ins.

Since you're writing a novel, you might take a look at yWriter. It's not a conventional word processor. It's more database-driven so you can write scenes in a non-linear fashion and then connect them, and also do things like track your timeline and characters. There are similar paid products, but playing with a freebie may give you an idea as to whether this type of software fits your writing style better than a straightforward word processor.|||It is useful if you don't intent to print the completed document, and for collaboration.

Libre Office http://www.libreoffice.org/ is the newer offshoot of Open Office.

Open Office was owned by Sun until they where bought by Oracle. The Open Office programmers disliked Oracle for many reasons and feared having their work turned into a closed source project. So they took the code and started Libre Office.

You can also use http://workspace.office.live.com/ which is an online version of the Office apps.

There is also Scribus: http://www.scribus.net/ for professional document creation.|||I suggest OpenOffice and it is free.

Is Free and is almost the same to Microsoft's word.|||Yes it is. One last alternative I can give you is Open office Org.|||Yes, but it lacks a great deal of functionality found in Word. It's on par with WordPad (did you consider using that? Just because it doesn't spit out Word documents doesn't make it bad).|||It's OK. go to openoffice.org ...it's like microsoft :)|||Its ok.

your best bet however is openoffice

its free and has

word

powerpoint

excel and a few others|||yes
